I'm in the middle of Team of Rivals now - it's history writing at its best. This comes from someone who has read so much critical analysis of 19th century US history that it's very hard for me to pick up a narrative and just enjoy it. Goodwin's tome is refreshing and insightful.
I may have to get my hands on a copy of McPherson's new book - that Princeton (where he teaches) rejected my graduate school application has not dampened my appreciation for the quality of his work. Plus I have an autographed copy of "Drawn With the Sword."
