Colorado Tour - August 29 to September 3, 2004

Little Brown Mug

Dot of Blue in a sea of Red, the cafe in Ft. Morgan is named in honor of favorite son Glenn Miller. Miller signed up for service in the Army Air Corps while he had a #1 hit, "String of Pearls," in 1942. A couple of years later his plane was shot down over the English Channel, leaving the band to Tex Beneke. I heard Beneke lead the Glenn Miller Orchestra once at Wolf Trap back in Fairfax. Beneke had a couple of hits of his own, "Chattanooga Choo Choo," and "I Got a Gal in Kalamazoo," but the whole thing really made you wonder what Miller would have done if he'd made it through the war. Miller's 100th Anniversary was earlier this year, but as far as I could tell, the only celebration was one concert in Boulder. Geez, he was only the second greatest swing band leader ever.
