Solar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>Denver Post<\/em> this morning reports that\u00a0a lack of rare earths may be inhibiting\u00a0the domestic solar cell industry.\u00a0 How this is so, they never quite describe.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no calculation, for instance, of what percent of a solar panel&#8217;s production cost comes from rare earths.\u00a0 Possibly, this is because rare earths aren&#8217;t actually used in the production of solar cells.\u00a0 According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.energy.gov\/news\/documents\/criticalmaterialsstrategy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">DOE study on strategic materials<\/a>, solar cells use indium, tellurium, gallium, and maybe soon, selenium, none of which is in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webelements.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">lathanide series<\/a> of rare earths.\u00a0\u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reitausa.org\/storage\/downloads\/State%20Dept%20Presentation%20by%20REITA%203.16.10.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">briefing by the Rare Earth Industry Trade Association<\/a> on the importance of rare earths to green energy applications doesn&#8217;t mention solar at all.<\/p>\n<p>By coincidence, the<em> New York Times<\/em> this morning ran a piece on why <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/15\/business\/energy-environment\/15solar.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\">solar panel manufacturers are relocating to China<\/a>, and it seems that the reason has nothing to do with rare earths, which aren&#8217;t mentioned at all, and everything to do with our willingness to take the place of Germany and Spain in directing massive subsidies to the panels&#8217;
