Santa Fe Trail

At La Junta, you have to make a choice. You can bear right and keep following Constitution Ave., er, US 50, on into Pueblo, and find out what happened to those free government pamphlets you ordered. Or you can bear left, and follow US 350 along the old Santa Fe Trail. That's Raton Peak up there, and on the other side is Raton Pass, which takes you up into New Mexico, and the last challenging driving you'll see until you have to find parking in LA.
This is pretty much what the pioneers would have seen, minus the roadway, electric wires, cattle fencing, and railway.
