This isn't to say that they always got the point right away. This is a 1930 cartoon from the Evening Standard's David Low. A lot of the German cartoons tended to show Hitler or his supporters as clowns or buffoons. Here we have classic historical analogy - at this point, Low can't imagine Hitler as anything worse than another Kaiser. Given what Britain had been through in WWI that was plenty bad, but it wasn't exactly a new type.
